Most of you probably aren’t aware, but I’m a HUGE Coheed and Cambria fan. Have been since IKSSE:3 was released. Favorite band ever. I start to like them, and then, I find out that most of the members are from where I grew up! Shit blew my mind. So naturally, when I started working at my job back home (a movie theater), you can imagine my intense shock and glee when both Mic Todd (former bassist) and Josh Eppard (drummer) came in to see movies. Josh was a ripe asshole to me at the time, though I’ve learned that that was a period when he was completely blasted on drugs, so I excuse him of it. But Mic came in several times, and each time, he would talk with me about movies. I knew he probably got asked about music all the time, so I decided to shift gears and ask him about what movie he was seeing. These conversations weren’t very long, maybe 5 minutes at most, but still, here’s a guy from my favorite band, at my workplace, having a conversation with me. HOW FUCKING AWESOME IS THAT?!
Anyway, so if you know Coheed, you probably know already that Mic got arrested before a show for threatening to blow up a Walgreen’s if he didn’t get pills. When I found out that, naturally I was pissed because it was the day before their homecoming show at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, which I had tickets for the day they were released. I also knew that he wasn’t gonna be in the band much longer, it was just something you knew was gonna happen. So, naturally, the show went on, and a few weeks later, Mic was out of the band.
He’s laid low since then I guess, since I haven’t heard much about him at all. Until today when I was scrolling through the Cobalt and Calcium forums, trying to find out who they thought was the new bassist that’s been teased by the band. Instead, I found a thread titled “Mic Todd diagnosed with cancer.” At first, I thought this was a joke thread by an awful troll. Then I clicked it, and come to find out, Mic Todd has been diagnosed with testicular cancer.
THAT SUCKS GUYS. I mean, yeah, he did something really awful and deserved to be punished for it, but not cancer. I’m actually legitimately upset about this. I know he isn’t in the band anymore, but he’s always gonna be “one among the fence” as Coheed fans say. I really do hope he has a very quick and healthy recovery.
